In recognition of our dedication to making our business as sustainable and environmentally friendly as possible.
Some of the initiatives of which we are particularly proud include our waste reclamation programme which began in 2009. This culminating in July 2014 with us becoming a Zero Waste to Landfill site, some 4 years ahead of schedule. Any waste that cannot be recycled is sent to a local Energy from Waste plant powering more than 500 homes per year.
Our food waste is split between local farmers who use it to supplement their cattle feed and a local anaerobic digestion plant. This process breaks down micro-organisms in the biodegradable waste producing electricity which is then fed back into the National Grid.
All of our waste is disposed of in the most environmental way and within a 30 mile radius of our site. Our staff are encouraged to recycle whilst at work and all of our changing areas, staff canteens and offices have recycling facilities.
We recycle water at Kanes using a plant built by local company Aquabio. 1,500m3 of pure clean water is produced a day by biodigestion and reverse osmosis. This is half our requirement and is enough to fill more than three Olympic swimming pools every week!
